Settlement reached in fire lawsuit over Fahtimah Manuel care
A Syracuse area settlement will fund lifelong care for Fahtimah Manuel, the 8 year old who survived a fatal Midland Avenue fire in 1993. The deal, approved by state Supreme Court Justice James Tormey, shifts nearly all of the landlord's $1 million insurance to Fahtimah, with at least $1.6 million guaranteed over 30 years and potential total payments exceeding $3.5 million beginning at age 18. The blaze killed Fahtimah’s mother and grandmother, and her brother and cousin, while the building owner’s insurer was named in the suit alleging insufficient safety measures and alarms.
