Mary Moore of Pitcher Hill was stranded when her car stalled in water at Lawrence Road and Sandra Drive. Deputy Sheriff Bart Reardon waded in in hip boots to reach her, lifting her from the flooded vehicle as shown in a left photo.
Torrents of rain and thunder flooded streets and basements across the region. Weather official Andrew P. Keller reported 1.23 inches fell by 8 a.m. with more rain expected as a new storm moves east. Deputies rescued a Pitcher Hill resident stranded in deep water and many residents reported water in basements and blocked basins while authorities fielded flood complaints.
Governor Harriman denounces Republican moves to trim his budget advising a 17.6 million cut from 1955-56 spending. A morning tornado tore through an east side district in Youngstown Ohio killing a 34 year old mother Betty Faisat and injuring nine people. Four homes were leveled and twelve homes torn from foundations in a four year old housing project with values between eight thousand and nineteen thousand dollars. Damage was estimated at 225000 dollars. The storm followed a violent electrical event that swept across Ohio last night.
Mrs Kathryn Thrasher of Onondaga Apartments drove to Carl's Drug Store and mistakenly got into another car. Mrs Marion Chester later found her car missing and located next to Thrasher's vehicle. Deputy Checkosky confirmed the mistaken identity and both women apologized at Thrasher's apartment.
Harvey Matusow refused to answer questions before the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee about testimony given in a 1953 Texas probe of labor unions. He said he would study the transcript before replying and asserted Fifth Amendment protections to avoid self incrimination. He had previously testified for more than three days in the subcommittee probe into his repudiation of sworn statements.
A crippled B 47 bomber on radar guided approach crashed four and a half miles northwest of Lake Charles Air Base destroying five houses and three trailers. Five people perished including three crew members and a young couple in the nearest home. One trailer resident suffered burns. other residents were evacuated. The crew identified: Capt. Clarence Wilson commander, Mark Beck co pilot, Capt. Elwyn McBee observer, T/Sgt James Sapp survivor with burns.
Nico Debarcsy of Drummond Oklahoma claims to be the world’s oldest living midget. The Hungarian native, three feet tall and about 25 pounds, marked his 70th birthday yesterday as a guest of the Lions Club.
