Severe thunderstorms swept Central New York damaging Onondaga County with downed trees and power outages affecting 12 000 customers. A gas main was ruptured and a firefighting response evacuated over 50 families in La Fayette. A funnel cloud was seen near Van Buren. no major injuries reported.
A violent weather line moved from Syracuse to Lafay ette with 59 mph winds and heavy rain, knocking out power in Madison, Oneida, and nearby towns. A maple tree fell, clocks stopped, and roads were blocked as officials reported no injuries amid widespread flooding and downed lines.
Emergency officials report gas seepage after a rupture forcing families to flee. Firefighters evacuated residents as a pipeline fire briefly lit the area. Officials explained valves failed to vent and a damaged generator hindered automatic shutdown, prompting manual closure.
A lightning strike ruptured a gas line in LaFayette on Wednesday prompting evacuation of about 50 residents along a 0.75 mile segment of Sentinel Heights Road. The American Red Cross opened an emergency shelter at La Fayette High School, with most families relocating there. three residents remained when the evacuation ended at 9:20 p.m.
