Shevardnadze Wins Unanimous Soviet Cabinet Confirmation
Eduard A. Shevardnadze earned unanimous approval from the new Soviet legislature as foreign minister with no questions raised. The vote collapsed for another nominee for the State Foreign Economic Commission after failing to reach a majority amid high absenteeism. All lawmakers supported Shevardnadze, whose authority was described as high by Tas, while ministers faced earlier committee questioning as parliament began using veto power.

Sharpton Charged With Tax Evasion and Larceny
New York Reverend Al Sharpton, 34, was arrested in Brooklyn then arraigned in Manhattan on a 67 count indictment alleging state tax evasion, grand larceny, and fraud related to more than 250000 skimmed from the National Youth Movement, an organization he started as a teenager. The probe, led by Attorney General Robert Abrams, ties fund raising to alleged mob-linked laundering via the group. Sharpton calls the case a political witch hunt and remains free on own recognizance with pending Albany County tax charges.
