Washington reports the United States ends its fiscal year with a surplus for the first time in 17 years, totaling about 1.14 billion dollars before year-end adjustments. Officials caution final figures depend on mid-June receipts and a large debt interest payment.

A US Army transport the St. Albans Victory and the Danish motor ship Bolivia collided 60 miles southwest of Nantucket in foggy seas. The army vessel carrying 70 crew and 10 troops plus a woman sent lifeboats as damage mounted and a Coast Guard air rescue attempted a water landing.
In Devon Conn a bystander Russell Hanson 24 of Hamden found the unresponsive five year old Russell Thomas son of Mrs Lillian Thomas at the bottom of the Devon Park pond Saturday. He carried the child to shore and gave artificial respiration until help arrived.
The 64 room mansion of the late Col. Edward R. Bradley was purchased by William H. Donner of Philadelphia and turned over to the Institutum Divi Thomae of Cincinnati. The 150000 structure will serve as a cancer research laboratory, officials announced.
