City extends coal buying without bids by 7500 tons
The Common Council authorized 7500 tons of anthracite delivery from Van Or Nam-Abbott Coal Co without competitive bidding, claiming a $1500 economy. Bids would be higher than last year, and the contract would keep mine-to-bunker pricing. The meeting also touched on a Mountainview Avenue sewer, a Nottingham playground, and reopening lather centers with traffic map updates.

Auto use tax stamp sales lag as new $5 stamp nears
Federal officials disclosed weak uptake for the new five dollar auto use tax stamp in Syracuse with only about 16 000 sold at the post office and 5 000 at the Internal Revenue Bureau versus Feb figures. The stamp becomes mandatory for windshield display and the old two dollar stamp expires July 1. Motorists face fines up to 250 dollars for noncompliance, and enforcement will rely on federal agents though local police have not been asked to act. To replace a lost stamp, motorists must file an affidavit including vehicle details and stamp serial number.
