Gov. Thomas B. Dewey and Gov. Earl Warren will meet tomorrow at Pantlig farm to map a vigorous national campaign. They intend to discuss preventing an overconfident GOP victory and plan extensive travel across the country. Warren will drive from New York City, with California's governor joining earlier.
The weatherman reports hot humid conditions with temperatures near 93 degrees. Scattered showers and thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow will not sufficiently lower the air. A southeast high pressure area and a western to midwestern low pressure system keep conditions stagnant. A thunderstorm at 2 30 A M dropped 0 64 inches of rain.
The British government declared a state of emergency and sent over 1,000 troops to the London waterfront to safeguard dwindling food rations amid a dock strike.
United Auto Workers accepted a company offered raise at Bendix Aviation Co in Teterboro New Jersey and returned to their jobs as reported by the company.
The labor liberal wing hopes to derail President Truman but runaway odds favor his nomination at the Philadelphia convention in two weeks. A Prague report via Rude Pravo says Yugoslav Communists were purged from the Cominform after purporting imperialist alignment. The communique declares Yugoslav leaders abandoned internationalist tradition and placed themselves outside the communist front and information bureau. It does not name sanctions but calls for “healthy care” of Tito’s camp.
Informant sources report former Kentucky Governor Keen Johnson, a AJL candidate, to be appointed secretary of labor within days. The nomination follows Jolson’s brief service as undersecretary to the late Lewis Schwellenbach, and was recommended to President Truman by AVF and President William Green.
The White House announced President Trueman vetoed a bill providing for restoration of the home of Francis Seati Wey, author of the Message Star Spangled Banner.
Mary Farber a 42 year old grandmother in New York won $20000 on the Stop the Music program after correctly naming the mystery melody Get Out of the Wilderness. She planned to use prize money to buy a home and gasoline station in West Palm Beach Florida while her husband a taxi driver looks to rent their three room apartment. The tax on the winnings is estimated by the Internal Revenue Department at about $7000.
President Truman signed the foreign aid act totaling six billion dollars. The program funds economic recovery in Western Europe and Asia over 15 months, with flexibility for earlier disbursement. It allocates 4 billion to economic cooperation in Western Europe, 400 million for China recovery, 1.3 billion for occupied areas including Japan and Korea, 225 million for Greece and Turkey, 35 million for the International Children's Emergency Fund, and 70,710,228 for the International Refugee Organization.
Edgar Kent of a Mississippi boosters' club described boosting efforts in Biloxi with a tale where a booster met a train and boasted about Loxahoma. A cynic joked about a cow standing in front of the town, symbolizing backstory humor in keeping up town spirit.
A lobster fisherman Louis Cabral Jr. rode a 60 foot whale after being tossed from his dory near Race Point. The whale surfaced, threw his boat and carried him about 20 knots before subsiding. He swam to his father's boat and was rescued.

A Greyhound bus and a car collided early today on Bayshore Highway in San Bruno. The bus driver and all 24 passengers were injured as the vehicle careened 330 feet into a concrete pillar before stopping.
A band of robbers who eluded Cook County’s security was traced to a Chicago home and captured. Stanley Demski of Lyons announced that 22 year old Jerry Malfeck confessed to being one of four men who held up a joint and shot two officers during a running gunfight. He claimed to have fired the getaway. Companions fled to Wisconsin.
A band of about 40 ex extremists raided the Kuala Krai police station and engaged an gun base with police. Initial reports say the wife of a Malay policeman was killed. Raiders, believed Communist, were said to have suffered casualties.
Ireland signed the first long term European aid agreement with the United States pledging joint efforts with other nations to foster European recovery. The State Department said the accord with Eire mirrors an agreement to be signed later with Italy.
Three major quakes struck western Honshu causing fires and structural collapse near Makui. Fatalities were uncertain with early Japanese and U.S. officials giving divergent counts. only Daishol reported 10 dead and 60 injured. Brig. Gen. Crawford Sams said damage remained localized and no tsunami indications were found.
A sharp earthquake struck Honolulu at 1 38 A M with severe tremors lasting several seconds. The fire department responded to alarms as residents fled indoors and telephone lines to authorities were crowded. The epicenter was Fukui Japan with Osaka and Tokyo feeling shocks. U S Army train movements near Fukui were reported.
