UN Border Unit Urged Amid Greek Crisis

United Nations delegates awaited Soviet response to Washington’s warning that further warfare along the Greek frontier may require force. The Security Council opened a probe into the Balkan Investigating Commission’s three month on the spot report on Greek border incidents. American envoy Warren R. Austin urged a permanent UN border commission to deter further attacks by Yugoslavia Albania and Bulgaria. Nine teens convicted in crackdown on Reds in US

Washington in a new government push against communism moved nine teen individuals before the federal bench. Among the defendants were Gerhardt Eisler, Eugene Dennis, Carl A. Marzani and 16 leaders linked to a Communist front. Eisler had been convicted previously of contempt of the House Un American Activities Committee and received a full sentence.

Refugees Report Major Soviet Uranium Hunt Across Hof

Refugees fleeing the Soviet zone into the American sector near Hof Germany recount a large scale uranium search. They claim Soviet scientists mined soil at Ober Schlema and Anna berg and shipped uranium rich soil to the USSR. Authorities report about 20 000 youths fled into the American zone this month and that 800 refugees were sent back Friday night. starvation drives many to escape.

Woman Falls Kills Baby in Freedom Plains

Police investigate the death of five week old Robert W. Smith after his mother Betty Smith 21 of Freedom Plains fainted at home and fell onto the infant while trying to hush his cries. The baby died Friday night with the cause under review.

Polish Parliament Approves 1.85 Billion Budget for Year

The Polish Parliament last night passed a 1.85 billion dollar national budget for the current year and adjourned until late August or September. The largest allocation is 260 million dollars for national defense, including foreign ministry expenditures.

Girl Makes Snow In Washtub During Planetarium show

Kathleen Roan of Providence built a homemade refrigerator using two washtubs and ice salt to supercool air. By breathing into the tub she formed a cloud and, after adding dry ice, produced tiny snow crystals in front of an audience at Hayden Planetarium in a science demonstration related to Vincent J. C. I. O. Rejects General Strike Stance on Taft Hartley Act

The 651 member C I O executive board ordered fight in courts and 1948 elections. Mass layoff looms in coal region as mines shut for vacation

In the Pittsburgh-Youngstown district nearly half a million U S coal miners began a 10 day paid vacation prompting the largest layoff in the industry to date. Carnegie Illinois, top steelmaker in U S Steel, employs about 55 000 in the district and will implement an immediate 59 percent cutback in district operations from peak capacity to about 45 percent. The action affects production workers totaling about 40 000 in district mills as the nation seeks a miners vacation.

York Fire Ruins Block-Long Plant in York Pa

A spectacular blaze destroyed a block long industrial building in York Pennsylvania with an estimated loss of 350000 to 400000. The fire still burned five hours after discovery as 15 fire companies and volunteers from surrounding York County fought the flames. Seven firefighters were injured but not seriously and treated at York hospitals. The building housed the York Shipley sheet metal plant makers of oil burning equipment and the Karl Ort aeronautical factory.
