New Advisories Limit Fish Consumption In Onondaga Lake

Health officials also relax Hudson River and Canadice Lake guidance but warn against smallmouth bass from Ashokan Reservoir. Sixty-one water bodies are now under health advisories.

Mercury Pollution Declines After Cleanup Efforts at Lake
Two years after initial cleanup, expert Effler notes mercury levels have fallen and future reductions hinge on cleaning two remaining sources: Allied Chemical waste beds on the lake's west shore and the Metropolitan Sewage Treatment Plant on Hiawatha Boulevard.

Diversifying Fish Population in Lake Surfaces in Studies
Ongoing SUNY ESF research shows a lake previously dominated by carp now hosts more than 30 species. By 1990 52 kinds of fish were listed, with white perch alewives and gizzards outnumbering carp in nets. Bass tournaments drew many smallmouth and largemouth catches, some over four pounds, while bluegills sunfish crappies yellow perch bowfin northern pike and tiger muskellunge were noted. The lake has never been stocked and migrants largely account for new arrivals.
