Stormy conditions forecast in Central New York today

Gusty winds and thunderstorms expected across Central New York with cooler air tonight and tomorrow. Low temperatures near mid 50s to 60s, highs in the 40s, west winds 15 to 25 mph with higher gusts. Rain chances about 40 percent through tomorrow. Syracuse temperatures listed in Fahrenheit and Celsius conversions.

Supreme Court allows spouse income in Medicaid eligibility ruling

The Supreme Court ruled 3 to 0 that states may count a spouse's income and resources when determining an institutionalized spouse's Medicaid eligibility. The decision rejected a challenge by the Gray Panthers and centers on federal Medicaid rules.

Top court upholds male-only draft

The Supreme Court ruled 6 to 3 that the Military Selective Service Act is constitutional and that young men must register for possible military service while young women face no such obligation. Justice Rehnquist wrote that women are not similarly situated for draft purposes due to combat restrictions, and the exemption from registration aligns with Congress’s defense goals. SU prof charged in murder attempt near Iowa campus

Syracuse University assistant professor Thomas Watts, 47, was charged at an initial hearing with assault with intent to commit murder after firing a .22 rifle at Dean Michael Brooks in the ISU College of Design building in Ames Iowa. Watts, held on 75000 bond, allegedly fired one shot that struck a metal door but injuring anyone. Police found another rifle, 340 rounds of ammo and two gasoline cans in the building. Watts taught at SU since 1980 after time at Virginia Tech.

Brooke Shields Supports Anti Smoking Ads Testimony

Teen star Brooke Shields defended a $68,000 anti smoking ad campaign aborted by the Reagan administration. She told the House committee the commercials conveyed a clear message and asserted the ads were not acting. Shields said she does not smoke and had only tried once at age nine.

Two Women Bound and Robbed in Home Invasion

Two city women, Louise Muserlian and Florence Dass, were bound and gagged during a home invasion in which suspects stole more than 36000 in antique jewelry. The trio, including two women posing as visiting nurses, fled in a 1977 silver Cadillac Seville not yet recovered.

Maryland teen wins gold at Moscow International Ballet Comp

Amanda McKerrow, 17, of Rockville Maryland, captured the gold medal in the junior girls 16 to 19 category at Moscow's International Ballet Competition. She shared first prize with a Soviet dancer, danced Blue Bird from Sleeping Beauty at the Bolshoi, and was awakened with the news by mentor Mary Day.
