U S forces in the Persian Gulf were moved to Force Protection Condition Delta after intelligence interceptions warned of a possible terrorist attack. Six ships were moved from a Mideast port and a Jordanian Marine exercise was canceled as authorities linked the threat to Osama bin Laden’s network and the 1996 Saudi Arabia barracks bombing.

In Lyon, researchers reported that processed meats may raise colorectal cancer risk by about 50 percent, while fresh red meat showed no clear link. Mystery death of 60 waterfowl at East Syracuse pond

State wildlife officials investigate the death of about 60 ducks and geese found Friday morning at a small East Syracuse pond. Wal Mart employees reported the scene at 8:30 am. Police and DEC bagged the birds for shipment to pathologist Ward Stone in Albany. No signs of human involvement.

Nowak suggests West Nile Virus could explain bird deaths but requires Stone's investigation. DEC would not test water without a pathology clue due to cost. Train plunges into Indian river killing dozens

Three cars of the Mangalore Chennai Mail derailed on a bridge over the Kadalundi River in Kerala, plunging into water. Officials report 57 dead and 288 wounded, with 46 bodies recovered and 5 buried under wreckage. 40 naval divers search the river bottom. The bridge spans 1,200 feet.

Croatian survivor finds new life after Bosnian war

Zlatko Grozl will receive his diploma at Oneida High School today after surviving eight years of war in Banja Luka. Born Croatian, his family endured Serb occupation, nightly shootings, and exile threats while rationing food from the Red Cross. He plans to attend Hartwick College in the fall as he begins anew.
