Medal of Honor for quiet rice soldier in Vietnam
SEYMOUR M. HEMSH WASHINGTON AP America's newest Medal of Honor goes to a shy 32 year old lieutenant who says he didn’t know he was being photographed during a dangerous night in South Vietnam. Lt. Williams recalled directing defense, stabilizing his unit and urging his men to stand firm as a Viet Cong regiment attacked. Despite wounds he kept his troops focused and fulfilled his mission, saying he only wanted to protect his men. He was executive officer of the A detachment, 5th Special Forces Group, and returned to the United States after a year in Vietnam. Williams, born September 17, 1933, in Charleston DC, now serves at Fort Bragg and remains proud of the Green Berets, calling them professionals who know their jobs. His wife Anita and their children attended the White House ceremony with President Johnson set to present the honor.
