Anderson Johnson 34 shot Gary Thomas 33 with a shotgun during a 12 30 p m confrontation inside Johnsons Route 711 trailer on Onondaga Nation. Witnesses say Johnson acted in self defense. A fire damaged the trailer later, arson investigated. no injuries reported. Grand jury review likely. Johnson and Thomas Onondaga Nation members. This was the second Onondaga Nation homicide in 214 years and third in 22 years.
Tropical Storm Allison floods the Texas Medical Center killing at least 22 and causing about 2 billion dollars in property damage. Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston report irreplaceable losses of tissue samples, cell cultures, genetically engineered animals, and decades of data, threatening ongoing research across breast cancer, infantile diarrhea, osteoporosis, and asthma. UT M D Anderson was spared, but many researchers must restart work and careers are altered, described as a tragedy in science.
College is not a universal path as high school graduates race into higher education amid rising costs and debt. Ken Gray notes many jobs outside degrees grow, with some fields needing qualified workers, while data show more college entrants than ever and only 57 college level jobs per 100 graduates.
