Lutherans move toward healing rift with Catholic Church
In Geneva the LWF Council approved the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification with the Vatican after 30 years of dialogue. The move lifts historic condemnations but does not grant shared Communion or resolve disputes over papal authority. About 80 of 89 responding Lutheran churches endorsed the declaration, representing 54.7 million Lutherans. the U.S. Evangelical Lutheran Church in America backed it, while Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod did not. The Vatican welcomed the move as a positive step toward unity.
