Priest to form new African American Catholic Congregation
Washington priest Rev. George A. Stallings Jr announces a plan to launch an African American Catholic Congregation on July 2 at Howard University Law School. He says the move seeks worship and parish life attuned to black culture, though archdiocese officials caution it lacks approval and may be considered schism. Stallings emphasizes autonomy and a rite with black clergy while noting no formal blessing from Cardinal Hickey. There are about 80,000 black Catholics in the Washington archdiocese.
