Constitutional Convention Debates Over Federal Plans
On June 19 1787 the convention formed a committee of the whole with Nathaniel Gorham presiding. James Madison urged the Virginia Plan while warning that failure to act could dissolve the Union and leave small states at the mercy of larger neighbors. Delegates McClurg McHenry Williamson noted as physicians. New York Virginia lacked quorum as Congress failed to meet and New Hampshire Senate passed a bill to vest power to regulate commerce in Congress Assembled.

Canadians claim evidence of planetary systems around sunlike stars
Canadian astronomers report strong evidence of Jupiter-size bodies orbiting two sunlike stars, with five other stars showing possible signs. If validated, about 45 percent of sunlike stars could host planetary systems, though results remain tentative and subject to longer observation for confirmation.

Jewish leaders threaten boycott of papal Waldheim visit
Jewish leaders in Miami may boycott a papal meeting with Pope John Paul II over his plan to host Austrian President Kurt Waldheim at the Vatican. The American Jewish Congress already said its leaders will refuse to attend the Sept. 1 conference, citing Waldheim’s wartime record and memory of Holocaust victims. The Greater Miami Rabbinical Association will discuss the issue with other leaders in New York, while Vatican officials suggest the meeting may still proceed to preserve dialogue.
