Superintendent Walden S. Corran says each new school will have only one clock in the main hall. Pupils won’t be clock watchers in the two Batavia schools.
Five jumpers perished when Sheridan Stables in Amherst burned down last night. Eleven horses were driven to safety by operator Patrick J. Lowther and his son Chief Stanley P. Jones of the Williamsville Fire Department. Cause of the blaze and damages were not disclosed.
Traced to New York City, Indiana gang members Richard Shurman and Harry Strom were captured in a midtown Manhattan apartment with armed accomplices. Shurman and Strom face police questioning as their spouses and another suspect are detained. they will be sent to Gary, Indiana.
A new low pressure area moving east brings occasional showers today and tonight. The system formed in Kansas and was centered over Northern Indiana this morning, slowly heading toward Syracuse. Temperatures will be moderate with tomorrow dry and cooler at around 66, 54 overnight, and precipitation near one hundredth of an inch.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory employees 875 in number ratified a new labor contract ending a March 1 dispute. Wages rise on average about 15 cents to 1.53 dollars per hour, with increases from 6 to 40 percent retroactive to December 18.

John Wallace of Newman Georgia was sentenced to die in the electric chair on July 30 for fatally beating his former share-cropper William Turner.
The draft bill sets 19 to 25 year olds for 21 months of service in the armed forces and allows up to 161000 18 year olds to enlist for one year. It becomes effective on signature with a 90 day induction wait, preserves exemptions for most World War II veterans, and outlines reserve duty, deferments for industry and education, and job restoration rights.
The Senate, after a prolonged 17 hour filibuster, approved by voice vote a compromise draft bill to begin drafting men aged 19 to 25 for 21 months of service. The measure now goes to the House for final action as lawmakers clash over passage and procedural rulings.
