Legislative fight over Onondaga sales tax shares unfolds

A Tuesday vote looms on three plans to cut Syracuse city share of the 7 percent county sales tax and boost towns, villages, counties, and schools. Suburban lawmakers argue for suburban gains while city officials say Syracuse as county core needs a higher share due to poverty and services. Each proposal keeps city revenue above current levels but shifts distributions over a decade. The debate centers on fairness, impact on property taxes, and who benefits most from the growing revenue pool.
