The new Senate Crime Investigating Committee chair proposed invoking the death penalty for dope peddlers. Prisoner James Gossett tried to worm through an 8 by 10 inch gap cut in cell bars with Bruce Barnhill. After three hours of struggle the 238 year old inmate called Jailer W D Mitchell who freed him by removing his pants, soaping his body and pulling him through the hole.
Tallahassee Florida embattled Sheriff Jimmy Sullivan resigns after a Senate Crime Committee probe into his return to office. He sent the resignation to Governor Fowler Warren with a rebuke of sensational slanders by local newspapers. Sullivan had been suspended after a grand jury indicted him on gambling law enforcement failures. the indictment followed the committee’s findings of unexplained money in his bank account. Joseph J. Marshall, 29, of Solvay, is jailed to answer to first degree assault after a tavern shooting at the Blarney Stone Inn on Route 11 near North Syracuse. Five shots were fired wounding Angelo Lodato, 32, a bartender, and Irene Challis, 31, with charges to be brought in Salina.
