Group Drops Leniency for Tax Dodgers
The Ways and Means Committee reversed itself and rejected a tax amnesty plan that would have allowed dodgers to settle with the Internal Revenue Bureau without enforcement. The panel directed a subcommittee to study the idea further and continued work on a bill trimming excise taxes by about 1.2 billion dollars while weighing up to 500 million in new taxes on large corporations. President Truman warned he would veto any bill that increases taxes without offsetting revenue. The measure aims for floor debate June 26 and a July 2 vote.
