A state commission proposes a temporary halt on expanding legal gambling and urges a 1 percent tax on proceeds to fund addiction treatment and family support. It also calls for stopping campaign contributions from gambling interests and favors prohibiting Indian gaming and related entities from contributing to state and rival campaigns.
Gordon Eubanks a longtime Microsoft ally and former Symantec CEO will testify as the antitrust case resumes. He argues consumers benefited when Microsoft added free tools to Windows even as rivals like Symantec faced competition, noting Symantec’s antivirus and utilities remained best sellers as his new firm Obfix grows with investors including Netscape and Novell.
An Education Department audit found loans forgiven after borrowers died were not always backed by original or certified death certificates. Greg Woods, head of the loan division, ordered the audit and said wage garnishment would be used to recover the forgiven loans.

After five years of stalemate Senate Republicans appear to have abandoned efforts to build a temporary storage facility in Nevada for reactor waste. Rep. Frank Murkowski plans a compromise allowing government title to the waste while it stays at the sites. The Energy Committee would vote today.
