President Reagan escalates confrontation with Congress as clashes over policy and budgets deepen. Senate and House Republicans question White House moves while Democrats push for legislative limits and oversight. The standoff raises questions about stalled programs and future approvals.
President Reagan framed a confrontation with a hostile Congress over urgent foreign policy and budget priorities. In a televised address he defended protecting Persian Gulf oil tankers with U.S. warships and touted the Venice summit while warning against tax hikes and domestic cuts. He urged public support and said the deficit must be reduced through deeper domestic-program cuts, saying he would lay the facts before the American people.
Captain Scott King, 45, who reports traffic for WHEN radio, made a safe belly-landing at Hancock International Airport after his Cessna 177 failed to lock gear. He dumped fuel, landed on grass with no injuries as airport briefly halted traffic. King remained calm and was praised by colleagues.

O’Keefe, ord 1968, led archdiocese schools and ordered a 1990s Mass halt for Dignity members, amid clashes with Gov. Mario Cuomo over abortion. The Vatican announced the selection two months before Harrison’s 75th birthday.

Private depositions set this week from North and John Poindexter ahead of potential open session questioning. Courts also grant immunity to Glenn Robinette as investigators probe a Swiss account link to Richard Secord’s secret finances.
Nicaraguan rebels claim Benjamin B. Linder, a 27 year old Portland engineer, was killed in an ambush near San Jose de Bocay on April 28 after locals say he was shot by rebels. Interviews with Sandinista and rebel witnesses raise inconsistencies in the rebels account. The government and family say he was killed by a close range bullet after being wounded while with Sandinista militiamen.
