Macy's Fifth Floor Fire Chaos At Herald Square

United Press International reports the government ordered regulated carriers to add a 5.6 percent diesel fuel surcharge on shipped goods to support owner operators, aiming to end an eight day trucking strike across about 35 states. Gas prices soar as Dressler cites record survey gains

Onon Daga County Consumer Affairs Director Erik P. Dressler reports gas prices rising at the fastest rate in five and a half years of surveys. Carey won't probe Hongisto in election funding case

Gov. Carey's office says the state Board of Elections must handle the inquiry into a $500 campaign contribution alleged to involve Senate Leader Ander son aides and Joseph L. Galiber. Richard Hongisto plans to resign August 1, and Pat Higgins, a minority liaison, is named in the cash transfer. The board has opened an investigation and will forward findings to the appropriate district attorney in Albany or the Bronx.

Senate approves multi city aid and SSI expansion in New York

The state Senate passed final approval for aid totaling millions to Buffalo Yonkers Niagara Falls and Syracuse Rochester and Nassau County.
