Waitkus Shooting Case Shocks Chicago Hotel Scene
Miss Steinhagen, a typist, shot Eddie Waitkus in a Chicago Edgewater Beach hotel room after a note and a fan letter led to a confrontation. She described a plan to kill, then attempted self harm, while police note a shredded note about her intent to die and a troubling fixation on Waitkus. Waitkus survived, and the incident echoes a Cubs Phillies crossfire of the era.
