House Grants Trade Treaty Approval After Vote

Congress passed a GOP sponsored bill extending the reciprocal trade agreements act for one year with changes. The House approved by voice vote after amendments from the Senate, ignoring President Truman’s recommendation for a three year extension. The measure would empower the Federal Tariff Commission to issue peril points guiding penalties, with the President free to disregard but must explain within 30 days. Senate passage was 70 to 18 amid Democratic defections, cited by Senator Barkley and others over opposition to the administration stance. Senator Vandenberg criticized the State Department’s stance as stubborn.

Truman veto extends benefits for blind and dependent children

Washington reports a presidential veto clears the way for large benefit payments to blind people and dependent children while blocking federal old age pensions for about 730 000 job holders. President Truman argued benefits are not high enough and that more people should join Social Security. Shortly before the veto, the House voted to extend coverage to about 3.5 million more people, mainly state and local government employees and non profits, but far short of Truman’s request.
