Coleman to Oppose Wilder in Virginia Governor Race
Virginia Republicans nominated J. Marshall Coleman for governor, defeating Paul S. Trible Jr. and Stan Parris in a tight primary. Coleman, 46, will oppose Lt. Gov. L. Douglas Wilder in November, a race with potential historic significance as Wilder could become the first black governor if he wins. All 2,008 precincts reported AP totals 147,610 for Coleman, 140,061 for Trible, 112,409 for Parris.

Delegates to the Southern Baptist Convention re elected Rev. Jerry Vines of Jacksonville to a one year term as president over Rev. Daniel Vestal. Actress Theresa Saldana attacker gets nine month sentence boost
Arthur Richard Jackson, 53, had nine months added to his term after a disciplinary hearing found him guilty of breaking prison windows and resisting a guard. He cannot contact Saldana without permission. The actress welcomed the decision though she sought longer restraint. Eight felony counts remain pending under a 1986 law on threats to victims and witnesses. Jackson, held at California Medical Facility, was due for parole after seven years of a 12 year term.
