Cardinals Rise With Munger Sharp Shutout Of Dodgers
The St. Louis Cardinals surged toward the top of the National League behind George Munger’s five hit shutout of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Munger’s righty-lefty pairing with Harry Brecheen strengthens a mound corps that could push the Redbirds toward division leadership as July approaches. The Braves and Giants traded a catcher and pitcher in a deal that may impact standings, while Boston’s Southworth continued strong pitching for a 6-2 win over Pittsburgh. Other results include Chicago beating Philadelphia 4-3 to stay near the NL lead and Detroit erasing a big deficit as the Yankees stumble toward the pace. The Red Sox opened Fenway to night baseball, beating Chicago 5-3 with Boo Ferriss earning his 5th win and Bevens suffering a 7th straight loss for the mound. Cleveland edged Philadelphia 5-4 as Feller fanned 12 in eight-plus.
