Curve Speed Blamed for Tragic Wreck
The Public Service Commission blamed excessive speed and possible mental lapse by a 66 year old engineman for the Lake Shore Limited derailment near Little Falls on April 19, causing 31 deaths. The ICC had reported the train hit Gulf Curve at 59 mph where 45 mph was allowed. The commission urged an age limit of 60 for enginemen on fast trains and a 40 mph limit on Gulf Curve.
