Reverend McConaghy Receives Honorary Degree at Lincoln University
The Rev W H McConaghy pastor of a Presbyterian church received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Lincoln University. The citation praised his work in racial relations and non segregated church policy. He previously led the Presbyterian Institute on Racial and Cultural Relations and served at Madison Avenue Presbyterian in Albany.

Parochial Pupils Win Poetry Prizes in Annual Contest
Three parochial pupils earned poetry prizes of five dollars each in the annual contest sponsored by Court Grimes 838 Catholic Daughters of America. Winners include Joseph Bender of Most Holy Rosary School eighth grade Dorothy Michaelis of St. John's Academy eighth grade and Donald LaCombe of Park Recad THRE. James E. Callaghan, superintendent, Rev William J Shannon court chaplain, and Miss Mary Gogtia education chairman judged at the rectory.

New School Vote Sought In North Syracuse District
A volunteer civic committee of over 200 urged a second ballot on plans to build a new junior high in North Syracuse Central and add to Marrydale elementary. Fred R. Sears announced the board will hold a second vote in late July. The high school project would cost about 3.387 million and the Mattydale addition 238 thousand amid poor turnout cited as a reason for the defeat.

Actress seeks divorce in Los Angeles suit
Broadway actress Irene Winston age 29 sues actor-producer John Shelton age 36 in a Superior Court action seeking divorce after a 1948 marriage and alimony of 300 dollars a month. Shelton, previously married to singer Kathryn Grayson, allegedly deserted her a year after the wedding.

Poems From Syracuse Diocese Pupils Forward for State Contest
Through Father Callaghan's efforts entries were submitted from across the Syracuse diocese. Although awards were given by Court Grimes only to local pupils, poems from Bachara Imhoff Whitesboro and Lawrence Yager Utica in sixth grade, Patricia Rourke and Robert Looney Oswego in seventh grade, Marie LaCombe Utica in eleventh grade, and Margaret Daniszewska Utica were forwarded to Miss Marie Curry for judging in state and national contests.
