Census data show 1986 fertility at 65 births per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44 nationally, the lowest ever. In Onondaga County births declined from 7,382 in 1985 to 7,223 in 1986, with rates hovering below the national figure amid rising skepticism about baby expectations.
A head-on collision on Route 5 near Harsh Road east of Chittenango at 6:15 a.m. killed Martin Brickner, 32, of Clockville, and another Chittenango man. Barbara Wiemeier, a Clockville resident, survived. Police have not released the second victim’s identity.
A 5.0 quake centered near Lawrenceville Illinois rattled 16 states and parts of Canada, cracking a bell tower and triggering an alarm at a Minnesota plant. It sent hundreds fleeing swaying buildings up to 700 miles away with minor injuries reported, including an 18 month old girl.

He defended his Iran Contra stance, noted no orders to aid the Contras, and pushed for a superpower summit and arms reduction as NATO ministers discussed terms.
Washington lawmakers from across parties pressed defense secretary Caspar Weinberger on Capitol Hill, demanding more than moral support from allies for protecting Kuwaiti oil tankers. They backed a U S presence but criticized insufficient allied action amid the Iran Iraq conflict.
