Fire Leads To Capture Of Prisoner At New Wood Mill
A $25 000 blaze at the New Wood sawmill early today led to the capture of William Shields, 44, who had walked away from the Onondaga County penitentiary quarry. State police in Oneida said Shields slept in a haystack near Fabius the night before and is being questioned in connection with the fire. Fire destroyed Morse’s sawmill equipment including a 60 horsepower diesel engine and heavy tools. Morse called police after noting no one was working, no wiring, and no fire in the heating plant. Corporal Clarence Walburg and Leo Eldredge located Shields along the railroad tracks about a mile and a half from the scene, near his reported route to Binghamton. Volunteers from New Woodstock and DeRuyter fought the blaze without success. Shields previously received 90 days for public intoxication and was noted as a repeat offender at the penitentiary.
