Cornell University officials defend a 12 million dollar woodchuck study as a cure research project for hepatitis B. Federal funding since 1980 supports work on how the virus infects the liver and potential treatments now entering human clinical tests.
Peter and Tasos Alexandridis of Athens traveled nearly five thousand miles to visit their birthplace and pay homage to Harley Davidson during preparations for Milwaukee’s 90th anniversary. State environmental officials say it is unlikely the DEC will approve disposing of ash from Onondaga County's trash incinerator in abandoned quarries at Jamesville. A plan to mix ash with cement to form giant blocks and stack them on 490 acres off Rock Cut Road was released by DeWitt leaders. DEC executive deputy commissioner J Langdon Marsh said a permit is required for any waste disposal site and indicated opposition to quarry use for ash.
Dewit considers a plan to buy two closed General Crushed Stone quarries in Jamesville to store concrete blocks made from cement and ash from Onondaga County’s trash incinerator. The goal is to reduce ash storage at a proposed Van Buren landfill. Blocks would be made at an enclosed site near the incinerator and transported to the quarries, less than a mile away.
Inert material such as construction debris may be deposited in quarries according to state rules. The page on page 48 outlines the permissible materials and regulatory distinctions for inert material disposal within quarry sites.
