Onondaga Locust Snacks Draw Native Food Toast
Anna Homer and neighbors on the Onondaga Nation snack on 17 year cicadas. The insects emerge every 17 years, crawl from the ground, grow wings, sing for two weeks, mate and die. Homer and family fry them, eat them with meals or as snacks, and even coax coworkers to try the delicacy. Entomologists note the cicadas are only found in limited locales and are a high protein food with cultural context among Native communities.
