Truman Gets UMIT Bill Passes In Congress
Congress approves a bill extending the draft law for four years and creating a universal military training program. The measure raises the draft age to 25, extends service to 24 months, and sets a 5 million overall strength ceiling through July 1954. President Truman is expected to sign promptly. A commission will study a training corps for all young men reaching the age.
