House Trade Act Revision Is Softened
Washington Senate Finance Committee voted 8 to 5 to extend the Foreign Trade Agreements Act one year with a milder revision than the House plan. The Mulliken Vandenberg amendment would require the President to notify Congress within 200 days if he ignores Tariff Commission recommendations. The panel rejected a House veto provision and kept party line votes on the measure. The current act expires Saturday as debate continues amid Republican opposition to a three year extension.

The Security Council had set a four week armistice and required observers, with the United States and Belgium agreeing to supply observers while France considered the request.
