Police sting nets 100 suspects in Syracuse fencing case

A massive Police Department sting in Syracuse ends with 100 suspects facing 550 counts and more than $3 million in stolen property recovered. Operation involved 150 officers from city and state agencies plus FBI, targeting a phony storefront fencing ring run 18 months. Indictments filed include grand burglary and fraud. arrests spread to several locations including California and Utah. Sixteen already in custody. several women among the indicted. Suspects confronted at home with sealed warrants, some in bathrobes, amid displays of seized items and firearms.

Katie Kerwin, 13, of Denver wins the 52nd annual National Spelling Bee with the word maculature after correctly spelling virescence. Maria Genecco, 11, of Solvay placed fourth spelling frisson as a word she had not studied. Donna Marie Allman finished third. Maria earns $100 and a consolation prize.

Pope Prays for Auschwitz Victims in Silent Cell Vigil

In Auschwitz Poland Pope John Paul I knelt alone in a barred cell and prayed for Holocaust victims. He honored Father Maksymilian Kolbe prisoner No 16670 who chose death to save Franciszek Gajowniczek. Survivors say Kolbe died by poison injection after surviving gas. He was beatified in 1971 and awaits sainthood.

Beef Price Slide Cools Wholesale Inflation Trend

Washington AP reports May wholesale prices rose 0.4 percent, the smallest gain in nine months, with beef at wholesale dropping nearly 7 percent the first decline after five sharp increases. Food prices fell 1.3 percent, while other consumer goods rose 1 percent as gasoline and fuel oil surged.

Agency shop bill defeated in Senate vote

A coalition of Senate Democrats and Republicans defeated a bill to extend for two years the agency shop law 38 to 16 despite warnings from Senate Leader Warren Anderson. The fight centers on a permanent mandatory agency shop and opposition from school boards groups. If not approved by both houses within two weeks the current deadline expires July 1.

Truckers block Indiana Toll Road in major protest

About 300 trucks halted a mile long section of the Indiana Toll Road four abreast for hours beginning after midnight, part of coordinated protests against rising fuel costs across the West and Midwest.
