Fire engulfs Great Lakes freighter Cartier cliffe Hall
Crews abandon ship as a raging fire breaks out on the 730 foot Cartier cliffe Hall in Lake Superior. At least five crewmen are missing and feared trapped in the engine room. Twenty-one sailors were rescued by two freighters and Coast Guard units. Injured crew members were transported to Portage View Hospital and the University of Michigan burn center.
