Washington reports a looming maritime strike as Coast Guard and Navy assess manpower with 2000 regulars discharged from overstaffed ratings. Naval stations log cargo-vessel experience while unions and ship operators press labor department for an accord amid a 56 hour work week dispute.
The outlook calls for fair to warm days with cool nights. Unsettled weather may form in North Dakota and Montana bringing cloudiness and possible rain in three to four days. Florida led the Southeast with 91 in Miami, while Phoenix reached 110 and Blyth, California hit 112 in the Southwest.

In Spokane Washington a shared misfortune led to neighborly aid as the Wynecoops with a flat tire and no spare met the Stricklers whose car ran out of gas. The Stricklers loaned fire and the Wynecoops towed them to town. They bought a tire tube and gas respectively, solving the ordeal.
Dr George Valley of Bristol Laboratories completes the first living American Flag using micrococcus stars on a blue field of violaceum. He notes Betsey Ross had an easier task with 13 stars, while his stars are nurtured germs enhancing colors.
Italy has voted to become a republic, ousting King Humbert II and the House of Savoy. War and Aviation ministers said the referendum gave the republic a clear majority and that remaining counts would not alter the result. The monarchy’s end follows Humbert's accession 26 days earlier.
Two former crew members of the Nazi heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen were deported from Philadelphia to Germany. Identified as Hanska, 21, and Eugene Schall, 20, the men were turned over to the FBI by a local resident. The FBI did not release the informant’s name.

In Chicago's financial district a 20 story La Salle Hotel blaze caused chaotic scenes as guests on upper floors waved bedclothes and debated leaping or staying. Firefighters and bystanders urged them to stay put while streams of nightgown clad guests fled through escapes.
A Soviet spokesman said Russia strongly opposes the United Nations Security Council sub committee conclusions on Franco Spain. The panel stated Franco Spain does not pose an existing threat to peace and the Council has no jurisdiction to authorize enforcement measures.
Four school children died and several were injured when a chartered Department of Street Railways bus collided with an automobile near Berkley a Detroit suburb. The crash disrupted traffic and prompted emergency response crews to the scene.
In Chicago, a LaSalle Hotel blaze left six bodies found on the 12th floor outside room 1248. Fire searchers discovered the room’s occupant asleep, puzzled by the emergency as officers urged him to evacuate. The man, in pajamas, dressed slowly and followed officers downstairs.
A 23 story La Salle Hotel blaze swept from an elevator shaft into the lobby and cocktail lounge killing 57 people. Coroner A L Brodie cites mass hysteria as a major factor. Fire officials call the deaths tragically unnecessary as crowds watched from the streets.
Laura Webb, about 50 and sister to Etta Webb of 502 Park Ave, is among the injured in a Chicago hotel fire. Fire officials say the blaze started in an elevator shaft below street level due to a single cable. One sailor leaped to death from the 18th floor. 200 were hurt and 30 firefighters among the victims. Spectators hampered rescue as flames spread and victims suffocated in hallways.
Msgr William Gorman Catholic chaplain of the fire department earned praise for exhausting efforts to rescue trapped guests and provide last rites. He tended the dying as Fire Captain Eugene Freeman died in the smoke and flames, with Gorman continuing to aid others despite danger.
Ex Marine E C Harrison 37 of San Francisco warned a fire in the Hotel La Salle bar the Silver Lounge while waitress Frieda Marianos 25 served drinks. He moved a seat cushion and smoke poured from beneath.
Chief of Police John A Kinney orders a citywide crackdown on traffic violators especially buses. Tickets to be issued for all violations while Syracuse Transit Corporation supports the move and promises discipline for offending drivers. Complaints note buses running red lights starting on amber and jumping from curbs into heavy traffic.
