Many GI Loans Are Second Mortgages
The Veterans Administration reports about 40 percent of guaranteed veterans home loans are second mortgages combined with FHA insured first mortgages. Lenders favor these because FHA rates reach 4.17 percent versus 4 percent for VA guaranteed loans, and the loans are fully insured. Bills in Congress seek to fund combination loans and direct 4 percent government loans for veterans unable to obtain private financing. Of 7582 loans in April, 39 percent were VA FHA combination loans.
