New Atom Weapons Spur Hopes
Washington reports new atomic weapons give Atlantic Pact planners confidence that a war winning capability can be built without bankrupting the U S and allies but warn Western Europe lacks manpower to deter Soviet attack in coming years unless allied ground and air forces are strengthened. Secretary of Defense Johnson disclosed six weapons under development including a jet carrier A-bomb and a tank mounted device capable of destroying tracked vehicles. General Collins noted a new light tank entering production while heavy tank plans await proof of mobile needs.
