Thousands of fans welcomed 7,000 amateur athletes as Syracuse University hosts the opening ceremony for the 10th Empire State Games at Coyne Stadium. Competitors paraded in white sweatsuits as sunset lit the event.
Rick Pitino addressed 7,000 athletes at Coyne Stadium Poliquin urging resilience during a special Empire State Games night. Syracuse welcomed about 8,000 spectators who filled bleachers and a stadium hill, cheering the event as 14 athletes were named to the new Hall of Fame.
Attorney General Edwin Meese III told a congressional panel that his Iran-Contra investigation should end loose talk about its adequacy. He said he was pleased with two days of testimony though lawmakers remained skeptical. Meese emphasized uncovering the diversion of Iran arms sale proceeds to the Contras while critics pressed him on his inquiry's casual approach and missing questions.
Syracuse Mayor Tom Young may order layoffs in police and fire departments to cut personnel costs after a state arbitrator granted unions a 6 percent pay hike for this year and next. Budget chief Kenneth Mokrzycki warns of cuts, as the 1988 budget targets and overtime reductions are pursued amid a citywide living freeze.
