Rick Pitino addressed 7,000 athletes at Coyne Stadium Poliquin urging resilience during a special Empire State Games night. Syracuse welcomed about 8,000 spectators who filled bleachers and a stadium hill, cheering the event as 14 athletes were named to the new Hall of Fame.

Layoffs Not Off Limits for City Police and Firefighters

Bridgeton Mined Off Iran Gulf as Minesweeping Seen

The Bridgeton struck a mine off Fars Island while moving north through the gulf with three U.S. warships. Weather improved and the tanker was expected to load oil at Sea Island terminal soon. Gas Prince finished loading liquefied gas as plans called for transfer of cargo before repair. Pentagon and naval officials prepared mine sweeping helicopters and the USS Guadalcanal to reach the region while Clémenceau and supports sailed toward the Middle East.
