German long range guns along the occupied French coast opened fire across the Dover Straits before dawn. British reports said there were no casualties or carnage. The cannonading was brief and Dover's shellfire warning was not sounded. The guns apparently aimed at shipping.

A German scout plane destroyed a British plane over central England and other planes raided an airport causing blazes in hangars. Active bombers attacked two British ships north of Tobruk yesterday sinking a tanker and badly damaging a freighter. In the ensuing air fight three British chasers were reported brought down while two Axis planes were lost.
Wright Aeronautical Corporation announces a flat 10 percent pay raise for 18,400 Paterson plant workers totaling 4 million dollars. President of the Wright Aeronautical Employees Association William Showers cites cost of living increases as the reason for the raise.
New York July 30 INS reports United States employment at its peak since 1929. A nationwide labor survey by the National Association of Manufacturers says relief rolls have been cut by more than half toward normal levels of unemployables and chronic reliefers. Some industries face acute labor shortages.
