Paris Couture: Romance and Fantasy Dominate Runways
Paris runways glow with escapist, opulent designs featuring feathered necklines and fur borders. Dior emphasizes tailored jackets and calf length skirts. Balmain debuts looks from 1946 under Erik Mortensen with praise for bustled, strapless, and amphora skirts. Nina Ricci and Ungaro highlight jackets, sarongs, bouffant gowns, and changeable taffeta while models applaud varied gray suits and black velvet evening wear.

Chanel last of an era in Paris fashion show
Paris AFP reports the Chanel haute couture collection marked the end of an era. Designers Jean Cazaubon and Yvonne Dudelle, hired in 1954 and leading after Gabrielle Chanel’s death in 1971, will depart in September to launch their own house with German backers. Rumors also swirl around Karl Lagerfeld’s move to Chloe. Chanel had returned to Paris fashion life in 1954 to keep the brand from fading into youth culture.
