Priest named to prison watchdog panel in New York

Gov. Hugh Carey appoints Episcopal priest Stephen Chinlund to chair the Commission of Correction. Chinlund, 42, will join a three member panel, with Senate confirmation due next January, and earns 99 650 a year for a five year term. He has led Big Brothers of New York since 1974 and previously ran Taconic Hills Correctional Facility.

Economic index up slightly in June with small gain

The government reports the composite index of leading indicators rose 0.3 percent in June, the smallest advance in seven months. May’s 0.7 percent rise was revised downward to 0.3 percent, and the earlier 1.4 percent figure was halved as new data show slower net new business for May.
