The U S Chamber of Commerce approved a policy allowing a single operator to run more than one form of transportation to encourage coordinated services. The measure passed by a large margin, 687 to 188, with a two thirds by law requirement.
In Queens during a storm a 14 year old girl Maureen Zane and Theodore Smith a two year old boy died after wading through ankle deep floodwater to reach his home. A live wire torn by the storm struck as they crossed 35th Avenue.
Soviet forces severed rail links at Siauliai and widened the bulge in Latvia and Lithuania as they closed on Memel. Vereimienko’s Daugavpils liberators head for the Gulf of Riga while Rokossovsky’s 1st wave advances toward Warsaw from Garwolin. Konev’s First Ukrainian Army surrounds Jaroslaw and nears Silesia.
The FBI declares 21 year old Randel Throneberry the most dangerous fugitive at large in the United States. He is linked to the torture murder of Colorado sheepherder Albert Purdy last August. Throneberry and his brother O B escaped from Steamboat Springs jail last October. O B was later captured in Texas and is serving 134 years.
Chinese spokesman C C Tseng announced Hengyang rail junction was entirely in Chinese hands as both sides rush reinforcements for a decisive clash. Japanese gains at Hengyang were contested with street fighting reports and Chinese losses claimed near Leiyang. The Japanese attacked southeast of Yungfeng about 95 miles from Hengyang to protect their left flank in Hunan.
Fred G. Gurley executive vice president of the Santa Fe Railway for the last five years has been chosen president to succeed Edward J. Engel who retires after 45 years. Gurley becomes chairman of the executive committee and will assume Aug. 1. Engel remains on the executive committee and board of directors.
Army Civil Air Patrol and state forestry airmen scoured Maine's North woods for three small planes with four men missing after a flight from New Brunswick to Millinocket. Rain hindered operations between Baker Lake and the St John chain north of Moosehead Lake as two of nine planes reached Millinocket and another was refueled near Clayton Lake.
Nebraska governor Dwight Griswold and presidential nominee Dwight D. Eisenhower selection cited as keynote. Connecticut GOP plans July convention to nominate U S senator governor and other state offices.
