Elmer Davis, head of the Office of War Information, said in London that the OWI setup there is satisfactory. He announced plans for an inspection trip to North Africa before returning to the United States.
John S. McCarrens general manager of the Cleveland Plain Dealer was shot multiple times by Herbert L. Kobrak who then killed himself. McCarrens was in critical condition after surgery to remove a bullet from his abdomen. Kobrak left notes for police and the press, and had sought financial help from the publisher.
Four soldiers were killed and 15 injured when an Army truck failed to negotiate a turn and plunged through an abutment into the Nashua River near Ayer and Shirley line. The 23 aboard were rescued, with several suffering exposure, cuts, and a broken hip. Fort Devens officials reported the fatalities and injuries.
Asuncion July 23 President Higinio Morinigo returning from the United States said the American war effort is really fabulous. He spoke at his first press conference after arriving in the capital and added he expected a new com final victory in the war effort.
Red haired Kathryn Holloway, 41, was acquitted by a Montgomery jury of beating her husband Dave A. Holloway to death with a stick after a reconciliation quarrel. Police said the victim had about 150 bruises. She testified she fought back when he returned with a stick and she struck him.
The Moreland Land Act Commission's investigation into Workmen's Compensation Law administration resumed in Niagara Falls after a conference with Mayor Stephen A. Lamb and local labor leaders. Commissioners Stichman and Bleakley ordered a private hearing Monday with witnesses subpoenaed and testimony from labor representatives. Hearings begin here and move to Niagara Falls this weekend.
New York labor data show construction industry employment rose 11 percent from May and payrolls up 15.4 percent in June. General building and highway contractors posted notable gains while building permits fell about 12 percent from the June average.
