Cult bill sponsor vows to try again next year
The sponsor, Assemblyman Howard Lasher, said he will press the measure in 1982 after Gov. Hugh Carey vetoed the so called cult bill for a second year. The bill would have allowed guardians for cult members over 16 for up to 75 days to permit deprogramming. Carey argued the proposal risked unconstitutional vagueness and privacy rights. Groups opposed included the state Council of Churches and the NYCLU.
