Nearly 700 Apply to Replace CIM Staff at Hospital

About 700 people crossed the picket line to apply for jobs replacing striking workers at Crouse-Irving Memorial Hospital amid a four day strike by Local 200 of the Service Employees International Union. It urges far reaching restructuring, including accelerated schooling, core general education for all, and head teachers with PhDs and higher pay.

Cuban hijacker seized in Cuba after Eastern jet to Havana

A clean-cut Latin man claiming a bomb hijacked an Eastern Airlines L 1011 from New York to Miami and forced a landing in Havana. Cuban soldiers dragged him from the plane, searched him, and seized his briefcase as FBI identified him as J C Montero, though bank officials questioned the ID. No injuries were reported. 210 passengers and 11 crew were aboard.

Playboy Channel to bow on city's cable TV

Syracuse Cable systems will add The Playboy Channel to its pay service in January with available options for $11 solo or $6 in a five channel package. The channel will require a wireless remote and compete with Showtime and The Disney Channel, with city officials awaiting council action on the proposal.
