Reagan backs tax hike bill in Senate debate
President Reagan repeated personal support for the $21 billion tax increase, writing a letter to GOP readers to aid debate. He praised the bill as good and balanced, noting it avoids scaling back his 25 percent three year individual tax cut and would help deficit reduction and tax fairness. Senator Bob Dole said the letter aids the bill as it seeks Democratic backing despite opposition from Senator Russell Long. The tough hurdle is a 10 percent withholding on dividends and interest for banks and others, with the provision expected to raise $11.6 billion of the $98 billion target.
