East and West Reach Madrid Security Compromise

After 31 months of talks at a 35 nation Madrid conference, East and West agreed to a compromise document on European security and human rights. President Reagan called it significantly better than the 1875 Helsinki accords as provisional agreement was reached to strengthen Helsinki provisions including enhanced security, economic cooperation, human rights, and information flow.

Senate kills MX funding amendment in swift 84 to 4 vote

In a largely ceremonial action, the Senate voted 84 to 4 to table an amendment proposed by Sen. John Tower that would have stripped MX missile funds from the military spending bill. Tower, an MX backer, offered and then moved to kill his own amendment to end debate.

Radioactive cargo plane crashes near Bristol

Abortion numbers rise in upstate New York in 1981

Upstate counties saw a 15.9 percent increase in abortions in 1981, as New York State reported nearly 160,000 total abortions statewide and 38,000 among teenagers. City residents accounted for about 63 percent of all abortions, with the state planning next steps on regulating second trimester procedures.

CIM workers strike over wage dispute at CIM hospital

More than 400 service employees at Crouse-Irving Memorial Hospital walked out at 6 am after union members rejected the hospital’s offer. Talks with Federal Mediator Robert Bowling yielded no settlement. The strike targets nursing assistants receptionists maintenance workers housekeepers and switchboard operators. Hospital plans to replace strikers permanently were confirmed while wage talks centered on a 5 percent retroactive raise and an in grade increase.

Police block protesters at Havana concert in New York

Anti Communist demonstrators shouted Cuba Si Russia No and threw eggs to disrupt the Aragon jazz group's In Concert With Cuba show at the Reacor Theater. Police blocked about 70 protesters. Capt. Richard Mackesy was struck in the eye and hospitalized at Roosevelt Hospital.

Girl, 8, receives new bone marrow transplant

An eight year old leukemia patient at Charity Hospital received a bone marrow transfusion from an unrelated donor. Doctors said it is too early to judge success but noted the operation had potential to prolong life. The donor was Stuart James from London, matched after eight months of searching.
